Selecting The Right Engine

mercruiser boat engineSelecting the engine (or propulsion system) for your vessel is essential.  Both the weight and the horsepower will have a major affect on the operation of your vessel.  If you have a vessel that is underpowered, the engine will have to work twice as hard, yielding you poor operation.

Now, we’ll have a look at the motors available for water craft:

Outboard motor
johnson boat engineAn outboard motor is very common and very effective on small boats.  These motors are really light, powerful, and exceedingly quiet.  Usually mounted on the transom of a boat, there are boats for sale that offer a motor well or even a bracket to mount the motor on.

The entire motor will pivot around, offering easy steerage as the rotating propeller forces the after part about.  Outboard motors come in a variety sizes and the horsepower can use various types of fuel.

Stern drive
These motors are also known as I/O engines, and are generally heavier than outboard motors.  Comprising of an engine mounted inboard and a lower unit connected to the transom, these motors provide power and versitility.  You can also angle the motor up and down to help furnish boat trim while you cruise.

Inboards
On boats that are more than 26 feet in length, these motors are very popular.  Similiar to the stern drive motor, the inboard motor is mounted inside the vessel towards the center, giving you good weight proportion.

power boat engineInboards link direct to the transmission, and so on through the hull of the vessel.  Then, the shaft is connected to a propeller which will rotate and drive the vessel.  The shaft is fixed and doesn’t pivot around.  Therefore, a rudder is mounted behind the shaft and propeller to help deflect the flow of water which supplies your steering direction.

Jet drive
The big advantage of Jet drive propulsion systems is they have no propeller to cause damage or harm to those in the water, including aquatic life.  Generally, they are inboard engines that will take in water that runs through a pump, powered by an impeller.

Then, the water is expelled at a very high pressure through a nozzle that will drive the boat.  To allow for steering of the boat, the nozzle will swivel.  For personal watercraft, a jet drive is the way to go.

Remember that when power Is not being utilized, jet driven boats will lose steerage, as the flow of water that moves the boat will not be there.  Thus, always keep any part of your body away from the pump intake – and never operate these types of boats in shallow water.

Boat Engines with Oil Injectors

Most newer boat engines and outboard motors come with oil injection systems, but older models will not.
